VW Golf R with RS3 Five-Cylinder Engine Swap: New Zealand’s Wildest Golf?

Harrys Euro close the chapter on their wildest Golf project yet — saving the most ambitious build for last, with an RS3 five-cylinder swap that cements their place at the top of New Zealand’s Euro scene.

Well here we are, the finale of Project R, and it’s been one hell of a ride. When Harrys Euro rolled this Golf into their workshop a year ago, it was bone stock down to the factory air filter. Fast forward to today, and it’s now running a 2.5-litre Audi RS3 DAZA five-cylinder under the bonnet, paired with a DQ500 gearbox and plenty of bolt-ons, making it capable of running deep into the nines while still handling and looking the part.

At a glance, it’s easy to underestimate what’s been done here. Engine swaps have been around forever, but modern performance cars are no longer just engines, gearboxes, and drivetrains like your typical Japanese build. They’re rolling networks of interconnected control systems, and it’s all about making the entire vehicle believe it was born that way.

For a while, the RS3 was only available as a hatch in NZ, but the sedan has returned — and it doesn’t disappoint. While the 2026 model hasn’t changed much since its 2025 facelift, the updates keep Audi’s compact RS sedan sharp, modern, and incredibly capable. It’s one of the quickest Euro performance cars you can walk into a showroom and drive away with. We’ve all seen what happens when these get a bit of a tickle, but this time, we wanted to experience one straight from the box and see what all the hype is about.

So why the swap? The 2.5-litre DAZA engine from the RS3 is regarded as one of the most capable modern performance engines in the VAG lineup. With its iconic five-cylinder sound and immense tuning potential, it offers a level of performance that pushes well beyond what the factory Golf R platform was ever intended to handle.

But installing it isn’t a simple “bolt-in” affair. Mounting points, cooling systems, fuel delivery, and exhaust routing all demand careful planning and precise execution. As complex as the mechanical side is, it quickly becomes clear that it’s only half the battle.
From the get-go, they ran into fitment challenges with the engine mounts. After some initial modifications, they were able to position the engine and gearbox correctly, and once seated, the combination looked right at home. That early win was short-lived, though, as the next hurdle quickly emerged: the subframe simply wouldn’t fit.

To resolve this, they took a factory RS3 subframe and reworked it to suit the Golf R’s steering rack and control arm. It was a critical step in ensuring proper geometry and maintaining drivability, while still supporting the larger drivetrain package.

Cooling was next on the list of headaches. The Golf R runs a sandwich-style intercooler slotted between the A/C condenser and radiator, whereas the RS3 runs a more traditional front-mounted intercooler setup. This meant not only different mounting points, but completely different hose routing and airflow management.

Staying true to the OEM+ philosophy, they opted to convert the entire cooling system to RS3 specification. This included fitting the RS3 radiator and condenser, which eliminated the Golf R’s sandwich-style intercooler arrangement altogether.

To ensure the charge-air cooling matched the performance goals of the build, they chose an IROZ intercooler unit featuring billet end tanks and a Garrett core. Given the power levels and intended use of the car, the stock RS3 intercooler simply wouldn’t be sufficient. The end result is a cooling system engineered to handle the demands of the DAZA platform, all while retaining that refined OEM+ finish.

Ask anyone who’s done a modern Euro swap and they’ll tell you the same thing: the mechanical side is the easy part. It’s the electronics that’ll age you. Modern vehicles operate on a CAN (Controller Area Network) system, which is the digital communication backbone that allows every module in the car to talk to each other. ECU, TCU, ABS, body control module, dashboard, and steering systems are all constantly exchanging data.

Drop in a foreign engine and gearbox combination and suddenly you’ve got components speaking slightly different languages, and if the translation isn’t perfect, you’re in limp mode before you’ve left the shop floor.

Getting the DAZA’s ECU and the DQ500’s TCU talking to each other correctly — with torque requests, shift strategies, load calculations, and wheel speed data — took serious time on the wiring side. Every module had to receive exactly the right signals, at exactly the right time, or the whole system falls over.

One of the cooler tech updates is in the Matrix LED headlights. You’re no longer stuck with just one look; there are actually four different selectable daytime running light signatures you can cycle through via the infotainment screen. Whether you want that classic RS checkered flag or something a bit more minimalist, you can basically change the ‘eyes’ of the car to suit. The aggressive look continues with the widened front fenders, which have been flared out to house the wider front tyres, giving it a more muscular look. 

A panoramic sunroof blacks out the roof and adds some nice contrast against the red. Around the back, the gloss-black boot-lip spoiler and updated rear diffuser tie everything together. Along with the tweaked LED taillights, the whole thing just looks wider, lower, and a lot more purposeful than the previous model.

After countless hours poring over wiring diagrams and CAN messaging protocols, they almost fired up the DAZA — but a few huffs and puffs later, the data logs pointed at a fuel issue. After rewiring and upgrading the low-pressure fuel pump and lines, the familiar five-cylinder growl came alive!

Out of the box, the DAZA makes a healthy 400hp. That’s plenty for most people. But the team at Harrys Euro are not most people. They fitted the popular IROZ IMS750 hybrid turbo — the same unit they run in their in-house DAZA 700 tuning packages — and the Golf is now running a Syvecs standalone ECU with full flex-fuel capability, drinking either 98 or E85 depending on the occasion. Haldex control is handled by a dedicated Syvecs controller, keeping all four wheels in the loop when it matters.

Outside, a Maxton Design aero kit keeps things looking purposeful without going full race car. A gloss black front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, and rear wing tie it all together nicely. Underneath sits a set of MTS Technik adjustable coilovers and 18-inch Enkei RPF1s wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S rubber to keep that Euro power planted.

The nine-second quarter mile is the target for the Harrys Euro team, with everything about this build centred around that goal. The strip date is locked in, and you know for a fact they’ll have the result for you soon. But for now, it runs, drives, and pulls hard — and it does it all while looking like a slightly aggressive but otherwise sensible Golf R, right up until the moment you hear that five-cylinder note and realise something is very different about this one.
