An unprecedented six one—two finishes for Nissan Motorsport Australia would mark a season where the Nissan GT-R simply outclassed any of its Group A touring car rivals. The year of 1991 will go down in history as the most-successful season for Nissan Motorsport Australia, and at the centre of it all was the most-advanced touring car of the era.
Following the ’91 season, the championship-winning GT-R was sold off to Malaysia where it was continued to be run by GMS — even contesting a round of the JTCC at Mt Fuji. It then sat dormant for 15 years until purchased and brought back to Australia for a full restoration by GMS to get it to race-ready condition. Check out the car in NZ Performance Car Issue No. 240 (in stores Monday, October 24, or you can order your copy online below) — but in the meantime here is some video proof of just how devastating the R32 was in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
