Quick view: an immaculate RX-2 from out of nowhere

18 July 2015

If you haven’t already checked out the 2015 CRC Speedshow, which finishes up on July 19, we will be honest and let you know that there is not very much in the way of import ‘performance’ cars. But as we strolled the halls checking out the hard-core race machinery (there is plenty of that), we did come across an RX-2 — one we had been keeping an eye out for since a few teasers popped up on Facebook.

The car is the old UZNGAS RX-2 featured almost ten years ago in NZ Performance Car — I’m sure if you’re a rotahead that poster of it cruising Quay St with no bonnet on was on your wall. Anyway, the car has changed through a few hands, and current owner Bevan Aymes along with a talented few including Leon Phillips, spent the last three years pouring over its rebuild.

The engine bay is what really stands out to us — the unique take on an intercooler set-up not only looks good, it provides very short piping and limits the amount of butchering required to fit it. Polished-alloy hardline is also another standout feature used throughout. It’s not all show either, with a decent turbo set-up adjoining the 13B block.

No that’s not a see-through bonnet, Mikey Samuelson,  an airbrush artist, has replicated the engine bay down to the finest details. If we were looking at this car from a judge’s point of view, it certainly ticks all the boxes and will be hard to beat this coming show season

So, who wants to see a full feature in an upcoming issue of NZ Performance Car?
