10 points: Toyota WRC driver Esapekka Lappi hits drone mid-air

While drones seem to produce some of the raddest footage to come out of motorsport today, most series’ discourage amateur drone pilots from flying at their events — the incident at the WRC Rally Italia Sardegna is the perfect example why. 

Toyota WRC driver Esapekka Lappi took ‘Micky’s Jump’ on the Monte Lerno stage of this weekend’s Rally Italia Sardegna when a drone lies directly into his cars path, being collected mid-air and damaging what appears to be the drones camera.

Luckily Lappi being the veteran he is, pressed on regardless and wasn’t swayed by his mid-flight encounter. It’s just a shame we didn’t get to watch the drone hit the ground hard for being where it shouldn’t have been …
