Daily Driven: Jayden McQuade is doing the diesel community proud

15 February 2016

We don’t only feature fully modified vehicles in NZ Performance Car magazine — the mildly modified daily drivers get a look in too! It doesn’t matter what it is, if you’re passionate about it, modify it, and drive it to work every day, we’ll showcase it.

NZ Performance Car: Hey Jayden, it’s not often we track down a diesel Audi to feature. Why did you choose the Audi?

Jayden: I have always liked having a car that’s different and always wanted this shape of Audi. The guys from Eurologik said I should go to diesel, so I drove Adrien’s diesel BMW from Tyres and More, and was very impressed. This came up at a good price, and it’s the top-spec level for A4, so I had to have it.

What makes the Audi’s engine package so special, and what have you done to it?

The torque of the diesel is amazing. It also has mental economy — I average about 1000km from a 60-litre tank on the open road. It’s had a custom ECU remap from Eurologik with slightly more boost, and most of the emission system that restricts power has been removed. The turbo-back Supersprint exhaust gives it a sound like nothing I’ve heard before, and better flow.

What performance upgrades are on the cards next, or are you thinking of upgrading?

With this car, I’m thinking a water/meth kit. I have been thinking about a hybrid turbo, but, at the same time, I have been thinking of another car change. I’m forever changing my mind about cars, [so] not sure where to go next.

Performance wise, what common Japanese cars would this stack up against?

I had an R32 GT-R, and the Audi is all-round better than that. Diesel is such a different power; it’s hard to compare it to many cars. With 30psi of boost at just over 2000rpm, it’s insanely quick off the line.

Quattros are known for their handling and grip — does this ring true with your example?

Definitely true with mine; I think the car would hold the road better than I can hold the steering wheel. It’s almost scary how well it sticks to the road for a heavy Euro.

Thanks for chatting to us, Jayden. There’s no doubt you’re doing the diesel community proud!
