NZPC Issue No. 222: epicness in print

28 April 2015

The latest issue of NZ Performance Car magazine hit the shelves with a big bang yesterday, and if you didn’t already pick up a copy; read on for a little taste of exactly what we will swap you for ten dollars cold, hard cash.

The reason it hit with a bang was ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett’s long-awaited RADBUL MX-5, which was finally unveiled to the world as the car itself winged its away over the Pacific Ocean ahead of round two of Formula Drift USA.

Before  the MX-5 left, we stripped it bare in Mike’s shop to showcase all the details that makes the twin-turbo 26B kill Nittos at a great rate. It’s funny to think that in the beginning Mike posted on Facebook asking his fans if it should be a missile or a pro-car build. Imagine what it could have been had the fans voted missile …

Just before taking overall victory at Repco Race To The Sky, we visited Possum Bourne Motorsport to take a look at the rebuilt Vantage Aluminium WRC Impreza. The legendary ex-Possum Bourne hill-climb machine has been rebuilt with a few modern improvements,  but in keeping with the 2000 spec when Possum first built it from a crashed WRC Impreza into a Race to the Sky champion. With Alister McRae behind the wheel, the car was able to repeat the feat in 2015, so check out what it takes to win the world’s best gravel hill-climb.

It’s not often that you will see a VL Commodore in NZPC, but when it’s built to the level of quality, and rocking a single-cam RB30 like Jay Singh’s is, we couldn’t think of a better place to showcase this RB muscle car. You won’t believe how nice the engine bay in this Commy actually is.

Crossing the ditch we take a look at an elite level RX-3 that is currently cleaning up on the highly competitive Australian show circuit. In terms of show cars, there isn’t much out there that can touch the level of detail this RX-3 has.

Event coverage includes our man Richard Opie spending a weekend away with his oldschool.co.nz family tearing up the Coromandel for their yearly Nationals. We have to say this club have it down when it comes to throwing a party!

Further down the line, we check out the first annual REunion at Ricoh’s Taupo Motorsport Park, where over 100 vehicles showed up for the rotary-only track day. A 10,00RPM celebration of all things rotary!

While Pedey checks out the Scandinavian version of the 4&Rotary Nationals known as Elmia, back home we cover off the final 4&Rotary event for the year — the V 4&Rotary Jamboree.

For all the tech heads, we chat to eight industry experts to get their opinions on blow-off valves. Read one, or read all eight, and make up your own mind on each brand’s placement, and if you even need one at all.

Nick Mitchell of Mitchell’s Race Extreme lays down some four-link knowledge explaining design, adjustments, and how to make sure your car is going to put that planned 1000hp to the ground.

But as always this is only a small taste of what you will find packed into the magazine this month. So get off the computer and out to your local to pick one up today. Alternatively grab yourself a subscription online at giveamag.co.nz. Or you could enter the draw to win one of two copies, which include a poster personally signed by Mad Mike himself. Enter the draw which closes May 4 below.
