Snapshot: Daynom Templeman drops his 2JZ E46

29 October 2015

With the Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship season opener now only weeks away, the steady stream of new hardware has begun to roll out. One of the most anticipated new season builds is Daynom Templeman’s new E46 BMW powered by a stroked 3.4-litre 2JZ. We have the car on our stand at Big Boys Toys at ASB Showgrounds from October 30–November 1, but for those that can’t make it, check it out below.

Having run big power 2JZs for some time now, it’s no surprise the new car is running a big-capacity 2JZ, this time a VVT-i model with Brian Crower stroker bottom end, and what we are told is a very trick head.

Thanks to a MSE Turbos–built Holset and the big ol’ bottle of ZEX nitrous, once Dobson Dyno Tune have run the engine up and tuned the Link engine management, four-digit power figures are a given, really. Backing the 2J is the Holinger sequential gearbox and Winters Quick Change IRS diff. BNR Engineering has handled all the fabrication work on the project.

More of BNR’s handiwork can be found in the cockpit, in the form of an extensive roll cage with double side intrusion. FIA-spec NZKW seats, as per D1NZ’s new regulations, floor-mount pedal box and Woodward steering column; the team have put a lot of time into making the interior clean and functional. One of my favourite touches is the suede dashboard.

Starting with a 330i facelift shell. the team have imported a full FRP wide body from HGK Motorsport in Europe. The 18-inch Work Emotion D9Rs have no drama filling those guards, either, thanks in part to the full Wisefab suspension kit, which offers extreme amounts of steering angle. Coilovers are Fortune Auto Dreadnought Pro items with external reservoirs.

We have a full feature in the next issue of NZ Performance Car (Issue No. 229) for a more in-depth look into what makes the car tick, but if you’re near Auckland this weekend, come on down to Big Boys Toys to check it out in person.
