Base-model grunt: Audi turn up the boost

27 October 2015

If it’s one thing both NZV8 and NZ Performance Car can agree on, it’s a V8-powered vehicle with two turbochargers. So if you’re in the market for such a vehicle, as most of us here in the office would be, then Audi have the deal for you.

In the past, Audi have offered their large A8 sedan in a sporty S8 guise and a base-model A8 guise. Audi have identified a need in the market, and have developed an entry-level S8 of sorts. The Audi A8 L 4.0T packs the same turbocharged four-litre that the S8 does, however instead of packing 520hp, you only get 450hp — only.

To be fair, this power figure is also less than the W12 model, which produces a staggering 500hp. However, with the A8 4.0T packing two turbochargers we’re sure it holds some serious potential, and it wouldn’t be hard to get power figures up above 500hp with a re-flash and some more boost pressure.

With the engine upgrade comes a fancy set of 20-inch and 21-inch wheel options, larger air intakes in the front bumper, and a lowered ride height to promote its sportiness. Oh, and if you like fancy stuff, it comes factory with diamond-quilt stitching, an Alcantara headliner, and a sunroof for those starry nights.

Not enough horsepower for you? Well, you might have to hold out for the Audi S8 Plus, which is said to boast 605hp — but that’s another story!
